VoIP Hurricane Prep Net Report – Saturday May 3rd, 2014

The following stations checked into the VoIP Skywarn Hurricane Prep Net for May 3, 2014. Stations listed may not necessarily be in the order that they checked into the net. Callsign data is taken from the HamData Dot Com website.

Note that just connecting to the Weather Talk Conference Server or an IRLP node (either directly or through a repeater) does NOT qualify as a checkin to the net.

You must be acknowledged by Net Control either via voice, or textbox, to get on the log. If you are not acknowledged, your voice or textbox checkin did NOT get through, and you will have to recheck.

Note that all hyperlinks are spelled out in the message, due to display issues with Facebook.

The 2014 WX4NHC Annual Station Test will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2014, from 1300 to 2200 UTC. This equates to 9am to 6pm Eastern, 8am to 5pm Central, 7am to 4pm Mountain, and 6am to 3pm Pacific Time (note that for those on Mountain Standard Time, the test time is the same as Pacific Time).

The Weather Talk Conference Server, Echolink Node 7203, IRLP Node 9219, will be utilized during the final 2 hours of the event, to make contacts. These times are 4pm to 6pm Eastern, 3pm to 5pm Central, 2pm to 4pm Mountain, and 1pm to 3pm Pacific.

Other contacts will be made via RF, via HF, VHF, UHF, Winlink, and with APRS on 2 meters and 30 meters.

Full details are on the Skywarn Hurricane Prep Net website at www dot voipwx dot net — look for the link on the WX4NHC Annual Station Test.

A few other notes:

1) Due to various issues, there was no training presentation with tonight’s net (May 3, 2014). So, checkins and comments were taken from all stations. The net goes back to weekly, starting with our next net, Saturday, June 7, 2014. Some Training Presentations may be scheduled, but those dates are not yet finalized. Watch the VoIPWXNet Yahoo Groups, Email List, and our pages on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

2) I apologize for the erratic connection tonight (it appears I was dropping out at times), but there were no thunderstorms in my area at net time…sorry for any inconvenience.

3) Several items for stations to note:

a) Stations are not permitted to connect with conference mode enabled. If they do so, the node will immediately disconnect them.

b) During the nets with Training Presentations, comments will be taken from VoIP WX Net Management Only. All other checkins, voice and textbox will be callsign ONLY. This is done in the interest of time for the training presentation…although net participants may ask questions or make comments after the training presentation.

c) It is appreciated if stations use ITU Phoenetics when checking into the net, so Net Control can copy their callsigns correctly. Again, if you don’t get copied, you won’t get logged.

4) An Online Skywarn Spotter Training Course is available if your area National Weather Service (NWS) Office is not currently offering Skywarn Storm Spotter Training classes. The course takes approximately 2 hours to complete, and helpful links are on this page. This course link is accepted by most NWS Offices, in lieu of attending an “in person” class. Type in “Online Storm Spotter Training Course” in your favorite search engine, and look for the words MetEd in the link, then click on it for more information. With Tornado Season now in progress across portions of the country, now is an excellent time to become a Skywarn Spotter, or to review the course material. The EF-4 tornadoes in Arkansas and Mississippi this past week should serve as a reminder of how violent nature can be.

5) More information on the group is at the website at www dot voipwx dot net — on Facebook at www dot facebook dot com slash voipwxnet — and find us on Twitter at voipwxnet
