VoIP Hurricane Prep Net Report – Saturday December 7th, 2013

The following stations checked into the VoIP Skywarn Hurricane Prep Net for Dec. 7, 2013. Stations listed may not necessarily be in the order that they checked into the net. Callsign data is taken from the HamData Dot Com and QRZ Dot Com websites.

Note that just connecting to the Weather Talk Conference Server or an IRLP node (either directly or through a repeater) does NOT qualify as a checkin to the net. You must be acknowledged by Net Control either via voice, or textbox, to get on the log. If you are not acknowledged, your voice or textbox checkin did NOT get through, and you will have to recheck.

Note that all hyperlinks are spelled out in the message, due to display issues with Facebook.

A few other notes:

1) Tonights net was an hour earlier, to take place immediately after Skywarn Recognition Day activities. Thanks to everyone who participated in Skywarn Recognition Day 2013. The net will go back to its regular time of 9pm Atlantic, 8pm Eastern, 7pm Central, 6pm Mountain, and 5pm Pacific Time, starting with next months net. Note that the net is now meeting on the first Saturday of the month ONLY through May, 2014. Weekly nets will resume in June, 2014. Our next net is Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014.

2) Also, with today being the 72nd anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, we wish to remember all the veterans who gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy…and to thank all the veterans…retired, or currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

3) Several items for stations to note:

a) Stations are not permitted to connect with conference mode enabled. If they do so, the node will immediately disconnect them.

b) Stations need to wait a moment before speaking after they key up, to allow all the links to rise, or the first part of their transmission will not be heard. Also, stations who are noted by Net Control as “noisy” need to change their location, or boost their power before trying again. If you are not copied by Net Control, you will not get logged. You may check into the net via textbox, once textbox checkins are being accepted by the Backup Net Control station.

c) Stations also need to watch their transmit time limit, as some repeaters or nodes will time out at less than 3 minutes.

d) It is appreciated if stations use ITU Phoenetics when checking into the net, so Net Control can copy their callsigns correctly. Again, if you don’t get copied, you won’t get logged.

e) Stations who fail to unkey after they finish their transmission…or who try to check in before their group is called, will be muted. The only exception to early checkins is for emergency or priority traffic. The order of voice checkins is VoIPWX Net Management, Skywarn Coordinators and EOC officials, international stations outside the continental United States, then stateside stations in three different groups. Please listen to Net Control for the designation of your callsign group. As noted, textbox checkins are welcome at any time, once the Backup Net Control announces that they are being accepted.

3) An Online Skywarn Spotter Training Course is available if your area National Weather Service (NWS) Office is not currently offering Skywarn Storm Spotter Training classes. The course takes approximately 2 hours to complete, and helpful links are on this page. This course link is accepted by most NWS Offices, in lieu of attending an “in person” class. Type in “Online Storm Spotter Training Course” in your favorite search engine, and look for the words MetEd in the link, then click on it for more information.

4) More information on the group is at the website at www dot voipwx dot net — and on Facebook at www dot facebook dot com slash voipwxnet

5) Everyone have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and we’ll see everyone for the next net on Jan. 4, 2014.
