VoIP Hurricane Prep Net Report – Saturday August 30th 2014
The following stations checked into the VoIP Skywarn Hurricane Prep Net for Aug. 30, 2014. Stations listed may not necessarily be in the order that they checked into the net. Callsign data is taken from the HamData Dot Com website, unless otherwise noted.
Note that just connecting to the Weather Talk Conference Server or an IRLP node (either directly or through a repeater) does NOT qualify as a checkin to the net. You must be acknowledged by Net Control either via voice, or textbox, to get on the log. If you are not acknowledged, your voice or textbox checkin did NOT get through, and you will have to recheck.
Also, all callsigns will be VERIFIED before posting to the log. If the call is found to be invalid, that station will NOT be logged.

A few other notes:
1) The net is now weekly, at 8pm Eastern, 7pm Central, 6pm Mountain, 5pm Pacific Time, 0000 UTC through the end of November.
On some nets where there is no training presentation, a question will be asked of Net Participants for their comments when they check in with their comments.
Due to the Labor Day Holiday Weekend, there was no question/comment of the week on this weeks net.
2) Several items for stations to note:
a) Stations are not permitted to connect with conference mode enabled. If they do so, the conference server will immediately disconnect them.
b) During the nets with Training Presentations, comments will be taken from VoIP WX Net Management Only. All other checkins, voice and textbox will be callsign ONLY. This is done in the interest of time for the training presentation…although net participants may ask questions or make comments after the training presentation.
c) It is appreciated if stations use ITU Phoenetics when checking into the net, so Net Control can copy their callsigns correctly. Also, when stations check in, please speak slowly…some stations are talking way too fast for Net Control to copy their callsigns. In short, if you don’t get copied (such as your signal is noisy, or you don’t use ITU phonetics), you likely won’t get logged.
3) An Online Skywarn Spotter Training Course is available if your area National Weather Service (NWS) Office is not currently offering Skywarn Storm Spotter Training classes. The course takes approximately 2 hours to complete, and helpful links are on this page. This course link is accepted by most NWS Offices, in lieu of attending an “in person” class. Type in “Online Storm Spotter Training Course” in your favorite search engine, and look for the words MetEd in the link, then click on it for more information.

5) Lastly, for those who have D-Star capabilities, the Southeast US D-Star Weather Net meets every Sunday night at 9pm Eastern, 8pm Central, 7pm Mountain, 6pm Pacific. John, WB4QDX, heads up the operation of this net, with several net controls.
All D-Star stations using their local repeater should have their radio programmed with CQCQCQ in the UR field, and their local repeaters gateway in RPT2. DV Dongle and DVAP users may access the net by connecting directly to Reflector 002, Port A.
Note that Checkins are taken from the southeast states FIRST…either by time zone, or in the alphabetical order of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas…followed by any states outside the southeast U.S. — the order at the discretion of Net Control (state or time zone).
So, if you are outside of the southeast US States noted above, it likely will be at least 30 to 45 minutes after the net begins before checkins from other areas are taken.
Also, checkins are taken via the quick key method…but when you key up, NET CONTROL WILL SEE YOUR CALLSIGN. In other words, YOU CAN NOT HIDE on D-star.
At times, on D-Rats, the Southeast D-Star Weather Net Ratflector will be activated during the net. That ratflector is at drat dot seweather dot net — enter that as noted above in D-Rats under File -> Preferences -> Radio -> Network — and use port 9000. When the D-Rats Reflector is active, checkins can also be taken on that mode.
