New VoIP Hurricane Net Control Trainer Announced

Hello to all..

After about 2 years of service, Matt Hoppes-KB3MSE has stepped down as net control trainer for the VoIP Hurricane Net due to additional commitments Matt has picked up over the last several months. Matt did a tremendous job of scheduling and conducting numerous Net Control training sessions since taking over the position in June 2006. We wish Matt well and all the best in his future endeavors and Matt may help us when he can as a Net Control Operator for the net.

Replacing Matt Hoppes-KB3MSE as VoIP Hurricane Net Control Trainer will be Mike “Sparky” Leger-N1YLQ. We are very lucky to have Sparky on the net management team as Net Control Trainer. Sparky has served the VoIP Hurricane Net in several capacities since 2004. Sparky has been an experienced Net Control Operator that has stepped in for numerous Hurricane Net activations over the years and has assisted with contacts in the affected area of hurricanes across portions of the US East Coast as well as other international locations. Sparky has emergency communications experience as an Amateur Radio Operator for the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Taunton, Massachusetts and currently assists with communications, operations and logistical needs for the Florida Coast-to-Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross based in Daytona Beach Florida serving Citrus, Flagler, Lake, Hernando, Marion, Sumter and Volusia Counties of Central Florida. Net Control Training sessions will be scheduled and announced as we move into May and the start of Hurricane Season in June. Please give Mike “Sparky” Leger your full support in this new position.

This is the first of a series of announcements as many in the VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team participate in the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando, Florida and visited the National Hurricane Center and the Amateur Radio Station, WX4NHC. On Tuesday April 1st from 130-500 PM, the Amateur Radio Workshop, featuring National Hurricane Center Amateur Radio Coordinators, Julio Ripoll-WD4R and John McHugh-K4AG, Director of Operations for the VoIP Hurricane Net, Rob Macedo-KD1CY and Assistant Director of the VoIP Hurricane Net and Manager of Preparedness and Response at ARRL HQ, Dennis Dura-K2DCD, will present a variety of topics concerning Amateur Radio’s role in Hurricanes.
