Atlantic Tropical Update – 1100 PM EDT Wednesday 8/14/13 – Tropical Depression (TD) 5 Forms in the Far Eastern Atlantic
Hello to all..
The Atlantic Tropics are getting active. Tropical Depression (TD) 5 forms in the far Eastern Atlantic Ocean and another system nearing the Yucatan Peninsula has a high chance of development.
As of 11 PM EDT, Tropical Depression (TD) 5 has formed in the Atlantic and a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Southern Cape Verde Islands. TD 5 is expected to intensify into a tropical storm. If it intensifies into a tropical storm as expected, TD 5 will be named Erin. After impact to the Southern Cape Verde Islands, TD 5 will remain out over the open waters of the Atlantic. Conditions at this time appear to favor this system not achieving hurricane status over the next 5 days but intensification forecasts can be prone to large errors and this will be monitored.
Another system is approaching the Yucatan Peninsula and may become a tropical depression before hitting the Yucatan. This system could then emerge in the Southern Gulf of Mexico. This will bear watching over the course of the next several days as it has a high chance of development.
Advisories on TD-5 and the Tropical Weather Outlook that is issued regularly and gives updates on the system near the Yucatan Peninsula can be found off the Main Menu of the voipwx.net web site. They can also be seen on the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:
The VoIP Hurricane Net will continue to closely monitor developments in the tropics as the peak of hurricane season is about one month away. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!
