Hello to all..

SKYWARN Recognition Day is December 6th, 2014 from 0000-2400 UTC (Friday Evening 12/5/14 from 700 PM ET-Saturday Evening 12/6/14 at 7 PM ET) and Echolink and IRLP will be playing a role in SRD as it has in past years. SKYWARN Recognition Day is an opportunity for National Weather Service Forecast Offices across the United States to thank SKYWARN Spotters for their efforts in obtaining timely severe weather reporting for the protection of life and property. This is the SKYWARN program’s main mission.

EchoLink and IRLP are just a couple of modes people can utilize to contact NWS offices during SKYWARN Recognition Day. Many NWS offices will be on 2 Meters, 440 MHz, HF, Digital other VHF/UHF bands. Additional details on SKYWARN Recognition Day can be found via the following links:

As in past years, the EchoLink *WX_TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP reflector 9219 system will be scheduling time for NWS offices in 1-2 hour time slots to act as a net control to make contacts with spotters that are on the system. If a NWS office runs out of contacts and there are other NWS offices on the system, the NWS office acting as net control can turn it over to a different NWS office to act as a net control on the system at their discretion.

We’d like to ask NWS offices to do their best to adhere to the schedule. Sometimes this is difficult due to the number of contacts received by NWS offices. We ask for everyone’s patience and working cooperatively to respect the time slot schedule.

..VoIP Hurricane Net Activation Starting at 8 AM EDT/1200 UTC Friday October 17th, 2014 for Impact of Hurricane Gonzalo on Bermuda likely lasting through Friday Evening. Activation will take place on the *WX_TALK* Echolink Conference Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 system for the duration of this event..
..WX4NHC-National Hurricane Center Amateur Radio Operations will also be active starting at 8 AM EDT/1200 UTC Friday October 17th, 2014..

As of 11 PM EDT/0300 UTC Thursday 10/16/14 US Time, Hurricane Gonzalo is a dangerous Category-4 hurricane and looks to pass very close to if not directly hit the island of Bermuda. Hurricane Warnings are now in effect for Bermuda. The VoIP Hurricane Net and the Amateur Radio Station at the National Hurricane Center, WX4NHC, will be activated starting at 8 AM EDT/1200 UTC Friday October 17th, 2014 looking for surface reports and information from Bermuda. Activation will take place on the *WX_TALK* Echolink Conference Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 system for the duration of this event which is currently expected to be through Friday Evening. Any stations in these areas and any stations with relays into the affected areas of Hurricane Gonzalo are asked to join the net to provide surface reports.

Tropical Storm Gonzalo has formed in the Atlantic. Tropical Storm Warnings are now in effect for Guadelope, Desirade, Les Saintes, Marie Galante, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, St. Maartin, Saba, St. Eustatius, Barbuda, Antigua, Anguilla, St. Kitts, Nevis, and Montserrat. Tropical Storm Watches are now in effect for Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra and the US and British Virgin Islands. Tropical Storm conditions are likely in the Tropical Storm Warning area and possible in the Tropical Storm Watch area. Gonzalo is expected to steadily intensify and could become a hurricane in 48 hours and a 100 MPH Category-2 hurricane in 96 hours. Hello to all..

Tropical Storm Fay has been battering Bermuda during the overnight hours and into Sunday Morning. Sustained winds of strong tropical storm force up to 61 MPH with wind gusts up to 82-86 MPH have been reported on Bermuda. Some higher winds have been noted by one specific weather station on the island but this may not be representative of overall conditions. Numerous other weather stations on Bermuda have recorded wind gusts in the 60-70 MPH range with up to 2.25″ of rain recorded. Other weather stations have reported much higher rainfall but the rain gauge equipment has likely been impacted by the high winds.

Power outages have occurred on parts of Bermuda as several reporting weather stations have not reported in recently from the area and the IRLP node to Bermuda was unreachable in the past hour. Another area of disturbed weather about 275 miles east of the Leeward Islands continues to show signs of organization and now has a high chance, 70 percent, for development within 48 hours and within 5 days. A Reconnaissance Aircraft is scheduled to investigate this area of disturbed weather this afternoon and regardless of development, it is likely to bring locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Bahamas and interests in these areas should closely monitor the progress of this system.
