Atlantic Tropical Update – Saturday 10/11/14 800 AM EDT – Tropical Storm Fay to Affect Bermuda – 2 Other Areas of Disturbed Weather Being Monitored

Hello to all..

Within the past 36 hours, the Atlantic Tropics have become active. Tropical Storm Fay has formed with maximum sustained winds of 60 MPH. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Bermuda and Fay my strengthen slightly as it makes its closest approach to Bermuda late Saturday Afternoon or Saturday Evening. Fay will then be absorbed by an approaching cold front on Sunday or Monday. Advisories on Tropical Storm Fay can be seen off the main menu of the voipwx.net web site and via the voipwxnet Facebook and Twitter feeds. Tropical Storm Fay advisories can also be seen via the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

There are 2 other areas of disturbed weather also being monitored in the Tropics. The first system is a tropical wave located several hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands. This system has low chance, 20% for development over the next 48 hours but conditions are expected to become more conducive for development by early next week and this system has a high chance, 60% development in the 2-5 day period.

The second area of disturbed weather is a tropical wave producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms several hundred miles west of the Cape Verde Islands. Upper level winds are not favorable for development of this wave as it moves westward and has a low chance, 10%, for development over the next 5 days.

The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team will closely monitor Tropical Storm Fay and the 2 areas of disturbed weather in the Atlantic Tropics. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

SKYWARN Recognition Day (SRD’14) – Saturday 12/6/14 – 0000-2400 UTC

Hello to all..

SKYWARN Recognition Day 2014 (SRD’14) has been set for Saturday December 6th, 2014 from 0000-2400 UTC (Friday Evening December 5th, 2014 – 700 PM EST-Saturday Evening December 6th, 2014 – 700 PM EST). The VoIP Hurricane Prep Net for Saturday December 6th, 2014 will be at 700 PM EST immediately following SRD’14 activities. The SRD web site has been updated and more details will follow in the coming weeks. See link below:

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mtr/hamradio/

As we have done for the last several years, the *WX_TALK* Echolink conference node: 7203/IRLP 9219 system will have a NWS Forecast Office act as a net control on the system and rotate among the various NWS Forecast Offices over the course of the event. Scheduling time slots to prior NWS Forecast Offices that have been on the system will be sent out later this month and then the request will be opened up to any new NWS forecast offices that would like a time slot as net control. There is also the possibility of D-STAR being utilized by some NWS forecast offices during SRD as well and we’ll coordinate with the D-STAR folks.

Further details on SRD’14 will be sent out over the coming weeks and months. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Atlantic Tropical Update – Sunday 9/14/14 – 200 PM EDT – Hurricane Edouard Becomes Fourth Hurricane of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Hello to all..

Tropical Storm Edouard has now intensified into the fourth hurricane of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Hurricane Edouard is expected to continue to intensify and could become a major hurricane in the next couple of days but it is no threat to the US or any other land area at this time as it will stay out in the open Atlantic as a threat to shipping interests only. Advisories on Hurricane Edouard can be seen off the main menu of the voipwx.net web site, off of our Facebook and Twitter feeds or via the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

The other areas of disturbed weather mentioned in the Saturday 9/13/14 Atlantic Tropical Update are no longer considered a threat for tropical cyclone formation. The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team will continue to monitor the Atlantic Tropics. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Tropical Storm Edouard and Atlantic Tropical Update – Saturday 9/13/14 – 200 PM EDT/1800 UTC

Hello to all..

We are approaching the peak of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Over the past few days, Tropical Storm Edouard formed in the open Atlantic with maximum sustained winds of 50 MPH. Edouard is expected to intensify into a hurricane but will remain out in the open Atlantic and a threat only to shipping interests at this time. Advisory information on Edouard can be seen off the main menu of the voipwx.net web site, via our Facebook and Twitter feeds, or at the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

An area of low pressure formed over the Bahamas several days ago and has tracked into the Southeast Gulf of Mexico. Upper level winds remain unfavorable for development as the system tracks westward across the Gulf of Mexico and has a low chance, 10%, of development. Shower activity with a tropical wave located southwest of the Cape Verde Islands has diminished with development unlikely as it moves either west or west-northwest at 10 MPH.

The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team will continue to monitor Tropical Storm Edouard and other developments in the Atlantic Tropics. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Hello to all..

Tropical Depression (TD) 5 becomes Tropical Storm Dolly in the Bay of Campeche with maximum sustained winds of 45 MPH and a minimum central pressure of 1005 Millibars.
