Hello to all..

The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team continues to monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Karen. Over the past 24 hours, Karen has weakened a bit to a 50 MPH Tropical Storm due to moderate westerly shear over the cyclone. There is a possibility that the shear could lessen and the environment could become more favorable for intensification prior to landfall but the odds of Karen becoming a hurricane are currently lower than yesterday at this time. Given the lack of ability to predict strengthening and weakening of tropical cyclones, the VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team will closely monitor the progress of Karen. In coordination with the WX4NHC coordinators, activation is currently not expected at this time but will be monitored closely with each advisory on Tropical Storm Karen in case a ‘short fused’ activation for Karen is needed. There are also track differences with Karen with a wide spread in the guidance of where Karen makes landfall. Future model runs will hopefully close the spread in model guidance.

In addition, the VoIP Hurricane Net Facebook and Twitter feeds auto update when new advisory information as issued by the National Hurricane Center. Tropical Storm Karen has formed in the Southern Gulf of Mexico and is already a 65 MPH Tropical Storm. Hurricane Watches are posted from Grand Isle Louisiana to Indian Pass Florida with Tropical Storm Watches posted for the Metropolitan New Orleans area to east of Morgan City Louisiana. Karen may reach hurricane strength later today or Friday and may be at hurricane strength at landfall. Advisories on Tropical Storm Karen are posted on the main menu of the VoIP Hurricane web site and can also be seen at the National Hurricane Center web site at the following link:

As mentioned on the Saturday September 21st, 2013 VoIP Hurricane Net, 9/21/13 marked the 75th Anniversary of the Great Hurricane of 1938 affecting the Northeast United States/New England region. The National Weather Service Offices in Taunton Massachusetts and Brokhaven New York have put together a web page on the Great Hurricane of 1938. The information can be seen on the following links:

As stated on the Saturday September 28th, 2013 VoIP Hurricane Net, SKYWARN Recognition Day – SRD’2013 will be Saturday December 7th, 2013 from 0000-2400 UTC which is Friday Evening December 6th 7 PM EST/6 PM CST/0000 UTC through Saturday Evening December 7th 7 PM EST/6 PM CST/2400 (0000) UTC. We will have NWS Forecast Offices and WX4NHC, the National Hurricane Center Amateur Radio Station in Miami Florida, on the *WX_TALK* Echolink conference node: 7203, IRLP 9219 system throughout all of SKYWARN Recognition Day. Where this year’s SRD coincides with Pearl Harbor Day, there will be some activities within SRD to commemorate that day in our history as well. Further details on SRD’2013 including scheduling of NWS Forecast Offices on our Echolink/IRLP network will be posted as we get closer to the event.
