Overnight and into Sunday Morning, the area of disturbed weather to the south of Bermuda became better organized and now has sufficient organization to be classified as tropical depression (TD) 8. TD 8 could intensify into a tropical storm and if that occurs, it will be named Hermine. This system could threaten the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a tropical storm. The area of disturbed weather south of the Florida Keys (known as Invest-99L) is also showing signs of organization this afternoon. This system has the potential to become a tropical depression within the next few days as it moves slowly northward and northeastward over the Eastern Gulf of Mexico. The system now has a medium chance, 60% for development in 48 hours and a high chance, 80% for development in 2-5 days.

A weak area of low pressure near the Upper Texas coast is producing disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity. This system’s close proximity to land and high surface pressures in the area should preclude development. This system has a low chance, 10% for development over the next 5 days.

Finally, a tropical wave moving off the west coast of Africa will move into a favorable environment for development in the tropical Atlantic  in the next few days. This system has a medium chance 50% for development in the 2-5 day period.

With the July 4 Holiday Weekend, be especially weather aware. If you see lightning or hear thunder, get to safe indoor shelter immediately…preferably a sturdy enclosed building, but stay away from windows. Do NOT take shelter in a portable storage shed…those or any place outdoors are NOT safe during thunderstorms. Lightning can strike as much as 20 miles from the parent thunderstorm…and the first strike you see, may very well be your last, if you’re not in safe shelter.

Remember, with Field Day in progress, to keep safety first. Weather wise, that includes intense heat, and thunderstorm potential.

With the heat, the towers will be HOT, and you can burn yourself without proper protection.

With thunderstorms, the towers are a huge lightning rod. Lightning can strike as much as 20 miles from the parent thunderstorm…so, if you note storms developing, get off the tower, go QRT, unplug immediately, and go to a safe indoor shelter. Remain there for at least 30 minutes until after you hear the last rumble of thunder.

TD Four has intensified and has been named Tropical Storm Danielle. Danielle’s main threat for portions of Southeast Mexico is heavy rainfall. A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect from Laguna Verde to Rio Panuco Mexico. Tropical Storm Danielle is the earliest 4th tropical storm on record in the Atlantic basin. The previous record was held by Debbie on June 23, 2012. Danielle is not expected to reach hurricane strength. At 200 PM EDT – Sunday 6/19/16, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area of disturbed weather in the Bay of Campeche about 175 miles east of Tuxpan Mexico. The system is becoming better organized and an air force Hurricane Hunter aircraft is enroute to investigate the system and it has a high chance 80% of development into a tropical depression. Given the system’s locality to land and the coast line, if the system develops, it will likely stay below hurricane strength. Updates on this system can be seen in the Tropical Weather Outlook product available off the Main Menu of the voipwx.net web site, via the voipwxnet Facebook and Twitter feeds and the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:
