Hurricane Ian Update – Likely VoIP Hurricane Net Activation Wednesday Morning 9/28/22-Friday Morning 9/30/22

Hello to all…

Hurricane Ian will be affecting Western Cuba overnight tonight into Tuesday with hurricane conditions and the Florida Keys with tropical storm force conditions during Tuesday. Later Tuesday Night tropical storm conditions will begin affecting the west coast of Florida and then higher end tropical storm force and hurricane conditions will affect the west coast of Florida Wednesday through Friday Morning. This extended period of these conditions are due to Ian’s slowing approach to the West Coast of Florida which will bring an extended period of significant weather with very heavy rainfall, damaging winds and storm surge so this is likely going to be a multi-day activation of our net.

We would like to line up as many stations along the west coast of Florida as well as relays into this affected area of the west coast of Florida as possible for our net. This is likely to be the largest activation of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane season.

Advisories on Hurricane Ian can be seen off the main menu of the VoIP Hurricane Net web site or at the National Hurricane Center web site at the following link:
https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

We hope to hear from many of you on our net and further details on the activation plan will be published on Tuesday as we get a better refinement on the time range of impacts to the West coast of Florida. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

The net handled many reports from Emil-VE1EP from the Halifax area relaying numerous reports of storm damage and providing measured meteorological data. We also handled many online weather station reports of sustained hurricane force conditions in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland Canada. Power outage information and relayed reports from various sources as well Amateur Operators who relayed information from contacts in the affected area comprised many of the reports received by our net. All of this data was sent to WX4NHC, the Amateur Radio station at the National Hurricane Center, and the Canadian Hurricane Centre. Additional post storm damage reports, pictures and videos may be received post Fiona. A link to our report viewer featuring all the reports received from Fiona in the Canadian Maritimes, Bermuda, the Turks & Caicos Islands, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico can be seen here:
