Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Holidays to All from the VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team!

Hello to all..

On behalf of the VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team, we would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Holidays to all. Thanks to all of you for your support of the VoIP Hurricane Net during 2014.

The 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season was slightly more active then 2013 but was still a relatively quiet year for the VoIP Hurricane Net. There were 4 formal net activations. The first two activations were for Hurricane Arthur and its impact over Eastern North Carolina and Arthur’s impacts as a strong tropical storm over Eastern Canada working with both the National Hurricane Center in Miami, FL and the Canadian Hurricane Centre in Dartmouth Nova Scotia Canada. The other two formal net activations were for Hurricane Gonzalo where the first activation was for the Caribbean islands including Anguilla, St Barts, St Maarten, St Kitts and other islands and the second activation was for Bermuda which took a direct hit as Gonzalo impacted Bermuda as a landfalling major hurricane. Numerous reports from both Amateur Radio and other sources specifically from the stomcarib.com storm blogging site and personal weather stations from weather underground helped to give hurricane specialists at the National Hurricane Center an understanding of conditions on the ground during these tropical systems impacts over their respective areas. Over the non-hurricane season months of December-May, training topics were given over the VoIP Hurricane Prep Net during the February-April 2014 net sessions and were well received by net participants. Recordings of these presentations along with their Powerpoint presentations can be found on the voipwx.net web site. During the weekly VoIP Hurricane Prep Net, a ‘question of the week’ was instituted for most weekly nets to gather more info and to have more of our net participants think of weather and hurricane spotting and weather/disaster preparedness.

Reminder: Final VoIP Hurricane Prep Net for 2014 on Saturday 12/6/14 Will Be at 700 PM ET/600 PM CT/500 PM MT/400 PM PT/0000 UTC

Hello to all..

A reminder that the final VoIP Hurricane Prep Net for 2014 on Saturday 12/6/14 will be held one hour earlier, immediately following SKYWARN Recognition Day (SRD) 2014 activities, at 700 PM ET/600 PM CT/500 PM MT/400 PM PT/0000 UTC. The net is moved one hour earlier to allow many SKYWARN Amateur Radio Operators the opportunity to check into the net and secure as the net is going on or immediately following the net versus waiting an additional hour for the net to take place. We appreciate everyone’s support of the VoIP Hurricane Prep Net and we look forward to hearing everyone during SRD’2014 beginning Friday Evening 12/5/14 lasting through Saturday Evening 12/6/14 and on the VoIP Hurricane Prep Net immediately following SRD 2014 activities.

SKYWARN Recognition Day (SRD) 2014 on the *WX_TALK* Echolink Conference Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 System

Hello to all..

SKYWARN Recognition Day is December 6th, 2014 from 0000-2400 UTC (Friday Evening 12/5/14 from 700 PM ET-Saturday Evening 12/6/14 at 7 PM ET) and Echolink and IRLP will be playing a role in SRD as it has in past years. SKYWARN Recognition Day is an opportunity for National Weather Service Forecast Offices across the United States to thank SKYWARN Spotters for their efforts in obtaining timely severe weather reporting for the protection of life and property. This is the SKYWARN program’s main mission.

EchoLink and IRLP are just a couple of modes people can utilize to contact NWS offices during SKYWARN Recognition Day. Many NWS offices will be on 2 Meters, 440 MHz, HF, Digital other VHF/UHF bands. Additional details on SKYWARN Recognition Day can be found via the following links:

http://hamradio.noaa.gov

http://www.arrl.org/news/skywarn-recognition-day-2014-is-december-6

Information is also available on this event in the November 2014 issue of QST on Page 85 of this magazine.

As in past years, the EchoLink *WX_TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP reflector 9219 system will be scheduling time for NWS offices in 1-2 hour time slots to act as a net control to make contacts with spotters that are on the system. If a NWS office runs out of contacts and there are other NWS offices on the system, the NWS office acting as net control can turn it over to a different NWS office to act as a net control on the system at their discretion.

We’d like to ask NWS offices to do their best to adhere to the schedule. Sometimes this is difficult due to the number of contacts received by NWS offices. We ask for everyone’s patience and working cooperatively to respect the time slot schedule.

Below is the current SRD schedule. See the list of NWS offices below:
