Tropical Storm Gonzalo has formed in the Atlantic. Tropical Storm Warnings are now in effect for Guadelope, Desirade, Les Saintes, Marie Galante, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, St. Maartin, Saba, St. Eustatius, Barbuda, Antigua, Anguilla, St. Kitts, Nevis, and Montserrat. Tropical Storm Watches are now in effect for Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra and the US and British Virgin Islands. Tropical Storm conditions are likely in the Tropical Storm Warning area and possible in the Tropical Storm Watch area. Gonzalo is expected to steadily intensify and could become a hurricane in 48 hours and a 100 MPH Category-2 hurricane in 96 hours. Hello to all..

Tropical Storm Fay has been battering Bermuda during the overnight hours and into Sunday Morning. Sustained winds of strong tropical storm force up to 61 MPH with wind gusts up to 82-86 MPH have been reported on Bermuda. Some higher winds have been noted by one specific weather station on the island but this may not be representative of overall conditions. Numerous other weather stations on Bermuda have recorded wind gusts in the 60-70 MPH range with up to 2.25″ of rain recorded. Other weather stations have reported much higher rainfall but the rain gauge equipment has likely been impacted by the high winds.

Power outages have occurred on parts of Bermuda as several reporting weather stations have not reported in recently from the area and the IRLP node to Bermuda was unreachable in the past hour. Another area of disturbed weather about 275 miles east of the Leeward Islands continues to show signs of organization and now has a high chance, 70 percent, for development within 48 hours and within 5 days. A Reconnaissance Aircraft is scheduled to investigate this area of disturbed weather this afternoon and regardless of development, it is likely to bring locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Bahamas and interests in these areas should closely monitor the progress of this system.

Within the past 36 hours, the Atlantic Tropics have become active. Tropical Storm Fay has formed with maximum sustained winds of 60 MPH. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Bermuda and Fay my strengthen slightly as it makes its closest approach to Bermuda late Saturday Afternoon or Saturday Evening. Fay will then be absorbed by an approaching cold front on Sunday or Monday. Advisories on Tropical Storm Fay can be seen off the main menu of the voipwx.net web site and via the voipwxnet Facebook and Twitter feeds. There are 2 other areas of disturbed weather also being monitored in the Tropics. The first system is a tropical wave located several hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands. This system has low chance, 20% for development over the next 48 hours but conditions are expected to become more conducive for development by early next week and this system has a high chance, 60% development in the 2-5 day period.

The second area of disturbed weather is a tropical wave producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms several hundred miles west of the Cape Verde Islands. Upper level winds are not favorable for development of this wave as it moves westward and has a low chance, 10%, for development over the next 5 days.

SKYWARN Recognition Day 2014 (SRD’14) has been set for Saturday December 6th, 2014 from 0000-2400 UTC (Friday Evening December 5th, 2014 – 700 PM EST-Saturday Evening December 6th, 2014 – 700 PM EST). The VoIP Hurricane Prep Net for Saturday December 6th, 2014 will be at 700 PM EST immediately following SRD’14 activities. The SRD web site has been updated and more details will follow in the coming weeks. See link below:

As we have done for the last several years, the *WX_TALK* Echolink conference node: 7203/IRLP 9219 system will have a NWS Forecast Office act as a net control on the system and rotate among the various NWS Forecast Offices over the course of the event. Scheduling time slots to prior NWS Forecast Offices that have been on the system will be sent out later this month and then the request will be opened up to any new NWS forecast offices that would like a time slot as net control. There is also the possibility of D-STAR being utilized by some NWS forecast offices during SRD as well and we’ll coordinate with the D-STAR folks.

Tropical Storm Edouard has now intensified into the fourth hurricane of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Hurricane Edouard is expected to continue to intensify and could become a major hurricane in the next couple of days but it is no threat to the US or any other land area at this time as it will stay out in the open Atlantic as a threat to shipping interests only.
