Hurricane Earl is an extremely powerful Category IV hurricane and is expected to stay a major hurricane as it makes a close pass within 125 miles of the Eastern Virginia, Eastern North Carolina, Delmarva peninsula region. The VoIP Hurricane Net will activate at 4 PM EDT/2000 UTC looking for surface reports from stations in the affected area of Hurricane Earl or from Amateur Radio Operators who have contact with the affected area of Hurricane Earl through any relays or people they know in the area. In addition, an activation of the net could occur again on Friday Afternoon and Evening as Earl makes another closs pass to portions of Southeast New England.

At 6 PM ET, the VoIP Hurricane Net deactivated formally and WX4NHC deactivated their operations as Earl pulls away from lands and moves more out into the open Ocean.

The most significant damage was in the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla with extremely heavy rain as high as 9 inches recorded on the island of Antigua. Hurricane Earl is expected to remain a major hurricane for several days as it traverses just off the US East Coast. Impacts could be felt near the Outer banks of North Carolina and New England/Long Island NY area. The cone of uncertainity is over these areas. It will become better known over the next 24-36 hours worth of model runs which area or areas will be affected up the US East Coast.

Tropical Storm Fiona has now formed about 895 miles west of the Leeward Islands. Fiona could cause tropical storm force conditions over the Leeward Islands. At this time, Fiona is expected to only remain at tropical storm strength and not intensify into a hurricane over the next 120 hours but this will need to be closely monitored. Tropical Storm Watches may be needed once again for portions of the Caribbean islands later this week.

Hello to all…

The Atlantic Tropics continue to be active. Another system off of Africa has a high chance for development south of the Cape Verde Islands. This system has the potential to become a tropical depression in the next 48 hours and will be monitored. Here are updates on Hurricane Danielle and Tropical Storm Earl:

Hurricane Danielle is now a Category-IV Hurricane on the Saffir/Simpson Hurricane scale which classifies Danielle as a major hurricane and the first major hurricane of the 2010 Tropical Atlantic Season. Danielle is expected to recurve out to sea far east of Bermuda. Interests in Bermuda, however, are asked to monitor the progress of Danielle until it makes the complete turn north and northeast away from the island per strong computer weather model agreement.

Tropical Storm Earl is expected to intensify over the next several days and become a hurricane with some potential for Earl to become a major hurricane around or after 5 days. Earl is not expected to affect any land areas until late in the period, where some models bring the system closer to the Bahamas while other models bring the system further out into the open Atlantic. This will depend on the strength of ‘the ridge’ or high pressure between 60 West and 70 West longtitude. Earl will continue to bear close watching as it traverses across the Central Atlantic Ocean.

Hello to all..

Tropical Depression (TD) #7 has intensified and has become Tropical Storm Earl, the fifth Tropical Storm of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season in the far Eastern Atlantic Ocean. Earl is expected to move steadily west to west-northwestward and will be to the northeast of Puerto Rico in 5 days. Model trends have been shifting southward and this will be monitored for potential greater impact to the Caribbean islands and Puerto Rico around 5 days from Wednesday Evening. Earl is expected to reach hurricane strength by Friday due to relatively low shear and warmer than normal Atlantic sea surface temperatures.

The Atlantic Tropical season is starting to get into full swing. In addition to Hurricane Danielle, a new tropical depression is likely going to form later today near the Cape Verde Islands and advisories are likely to be initiated today for this system. If that occurs, this will be the 7th tropical depression of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season. If it increases into a tropical storm, it would be named Earl. An update on this system will occur later today if it becomes a tropical depression.

Danielle is now a hurricane and is the second hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Danielle is expected to undergo rapid intensification and may reach major hurricane status in the next day or two. Computer models continue to project Danielle to recurve and remain out in the open Atlantic Ocean but track errors can be large when predicting hurricane tracks beyond a 3-day period.

Hello to all..

Tropical Depression (TD) #6 has intensified and has become Tropical Storm Danielle, the fourth Tropical Storm of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season. After a northward jog of the system today, Danielle’s track is bending back toward the west-northwest. Model projections still favor an offshore, recurvature solution but model spreads have widened and given its still relatively low latitude, the progress of Danielle will continue to be monitored over the next several days. Intensity guidance models have backed off on making Danielle a hurricane but the current advisory and official forecast as of late Sunday Evening 8/22/10 has Danielle near hurricane strength by late Tuesday.
