Atlantic Tropical Update – Saturday 8/17/13 – 800 AM EDT

Hello to all..

Here is a brief update on the Atlantic Tropics as of approximately 800 AM Saturday Morning 8/17/13.

Tropical Depression (TD) 5 became Tropical Storm Erin a couple days ago. Conditions are not favorable for additional development and Erin is forecast to recurve in the open Atlantic so Erin is no threat to land for the next several days.

An area of low pressure about 150 miles west-northwest of Campeche Mexico has a 40-50% chance of development over the next 5 days. Interests in the Western and Central Gulf of Mexico should continue to monitor this system.

Advisories on Erin and the Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook can be found on the voipwx.net web site off of the Main Menu of the web site. They can also be found at the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

It is noted that the 2-week forecast on tropical conditions issued by Dr. Gray and Phil Klotzbach indicates that there could be an additional system that forms off the Africa coast with a better chance of intensifying as it traverses the Atlantic in the 5-7 day period. This will be monitored to see if that occurs.

The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team will closely monitor the systems in the Atlantic Tropics. Thanks to all for your continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Atlantic Tropical Update – 1100 PM EDT Wednesday 8/14/13 – Tropical Depression (TD) 5 Forms in the Far Eastern Atlantic

Hello to all..

The Atlantic Tropics are getting active. Tropical Depression (TD) 5 forms in the far Eastern Atlantic Ocean and another system nearing the Yucatan Peninsula has a high chance of development.

As of 11 PM EDT, Tropical Depression (TD) 5 has formed in the Atlantic and a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Southern Cape Verde Islands. TD 5 is expected to intensify into a tropical storm. If it intensifies into a tropical storm as expected, TD 5 will be named Erin. After impact to the Southern Cape Verde Islands, TD 5 will remain out over the open waters of the Atlantic. Conditions at this time appear to favor this system not achieving hurricane status over the next 5 days but intensification forecasts can be prone to large errors and this will be monitored.

Another system is approaching the Yucatan Peninsula and may become a tropical depression before hitting the Yucatan. This system could then emerge in the Southern Gulf of Mexico. This will bear watching over the course of the next several days as it has a high chance of development.

Advisories on TD-5 and the Tropical Weather Outlook that is issued regularly and gives updates on the system near the Yucatan Peninsula can be found off the Main Menu of the voipwx.net web site. They can also be seen on the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

The VoIP Hurricane Net will continue to closely monitor developments in the tropics as the peak of hurricane season is about one month away. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!
