VoIP Hurricane Net Deactivates for Hurricane Earl & Tropical Storm Fiona Forms in Atlantic

Hello to all..

At 6 PM ET, the VoIP Hurricane Net deactivated formally and WX4NHC deactivated their operations as Earl pulls away from lands and moves more out into the open Ocean.

The most significant damage was in the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla with extremely heavy rain as high as 9 inches recorded on the island of Antigua. Reports received by the VoIP Hurricane Net via Amateur Radio Operators and through storm bloggers on stormcarib.com can be seen via the following link:

http://report.voipwx.net/qilan/nhcwx/list_VOIP_records?auth=OK

Hurricane Earl is expected to remain a major hurricane for several days as it traverses just off the US East Coast. Impacts could be felt near the Outer banks of North Carolina and New England/Long Island NY area. The cone of uncertainity is over these areas. It will become better known over the next 24-36 hours worth of model runs which area or areas will be affected up the US East Coast.

Tropical Storm Fiona has now formed about 895 miles west of the Leeward Islands. Fiona could cause tropical storm force conditions over the Leeward Islands. At this time, Fiona is expected to only remain at tropical storm strength and not intensify into a hurricane over the next 120 hours but this will need to be closely monitored. Tropical Storm Watches may be needed once again for portions of the Caribbean islands later this week.

VoIP Hurricane Net Activation for Hurricane Earl to Commence on Monday August 30th, 2010 at 8 AM EDT/1200 UTC

Hello to all..

..VoIP Hurricane Net to activate formally at 8 AM EDT/7 AM CDT/1200 UTC Monday August 30th, 2010 for Impact of Hurricane Earl on the Northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Activation is expected to last through Monday Evening potentially. Activation will take place on the *WX_TALK* Echolink Conference Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 system for the duration of this event..
…WX4NHC Operations Will Also Activate at 8 AM EDT/7 AM CDT/1200 UTC for Hurricane Earl’s Impact on the Northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico..

Hurricane Earl is expected to intensify and become a strong Category 1 to Category 2 hurricane as it moves westward to possibly west-northwestward near or through the Northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Hurricane Earl’s hurricane force wind field is forecast to stay just north of the islands but any deviation to the south of the current track guidance would bring the hurricane force wind field to the Northern Leeward Islands and possibly the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The VoIP Hurricane Net will activate at 8 AM EDT/7 AM CDT/1200 UTC looking for surface reports from stations in the affected area of Hurricane Earl or from Amateur Radio Operators who have contact with the affected area of Hurricane Earl through any relays or people they know in the area.

Tropical Storm Earl Update and Possible Net Activation Late Sunday Night or Monday Morning

Hello to all…

Tropical Storm Earl poses a threat to the Caribbean islands late tonight and Monday. At this time, Earl is expected to intensify into a hurricane later today and on its current track the hurricane force conditions are expected to be just offshore of the islands but a slight deviation south would bring the hurricane force conditions to the islands. This could prompt VoIP Hurricane Net activation for Earl some time late tonight or Monday Morning unless it pulls further north away from the islands.

Thereafter, Earl is expected to pull northwestward and then northward a few hundred miles off the US East Coast and then tracking northeast causing a ‘glancing blow’ of tropical storm force conditions to Southeastern New England. Other model guidance such as the reliable European Model brings Earl closer to the coast with a more direct hit on Southern New England. This will be closely monitored. Low-level preparations and situational awareness has already commenced in Southern New England regarding Earl and has been noted in the NWS Taunton Massachusetts Hazardous Weather Outlook.

Once again, Earl advisory information can be seen on the VoIPWXNet web site by looking under Atlantic Tropical Products off the Main Menu of the web site. Earl Advisory information can also be seen off the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

The VoIP Hurricane Net Management will closely monitor the progress of Earl. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Atlantic Tropical Update – 8/27/2010

Hello to all…

The Atlantic Tropics continue to be active. Another system off of Africa has a high chance for development south of the Cape Verde Islands. This system has the potential to become a tropical depression in the next 48 hours and will be monitored. Here are updates on Hurricane Danielle and Tropical Storm Earl:

Hurricane Danielle is now a Category-IV Hurricane on the Saffir/Simpson Hurricane scale which classifies Danielle as a major hurricane and the first major hurricane of the 2010 Tropical Atlantic Season. Danielle is expected to recurve out to sea far east of Bermuda. Interests in Bermuda, however, are asked to monitor the progress of Danielle until it makes the complete turn north and northeast away from the island per strong computer weather model agreement.

Tropical Storm Earl is expected to intensify over the next several days and become a hurricane with some potential for Earl to become a major hurricane around or after 5 days. Earl is not expected to affect any land areas until late in the period, where some models bring the system closer to the Bahamas while other models bring the system further out into the open Atlantic. This will depend on the strength of ‘the ridge’ or high pressure between 60 West and 70 West longtitude. Earl will continue to bear close watching as it traverses across the Central Atlantic Ocean.

Earl and Danielle advisory information can be seen on the VoIPWXNet web site by looking under Atlantic Tropical Products off the Main Menu of the web site. Earl and Danielle Advisory information can also be seen off the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

Tropical Depression (TD) #7 Becomes Tropical Storm Earl in Far Eastern Atlantic Ocean

Hello to all..

Tropical Depression (TD) #7 has intensified and has become Tropical Storm Earl, the fifth Tropical Storm of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season in the far Eastern Atlantic Ocean. Earl is expected to move steadily west to west-northwestward and will be to the northeast of Puerto Rico in 5 days. Model trends have been shifting southward and this will be monitored for potential greater impact to the Caribbean islands and Puerto Rico around 5 days from Wednesday Evening. Earl is expected to reach hurricane strength by Friday due to relatively low shear and warmer than normal Atlantic sea surface temperatures.

Earl advisory information can be seen on the VoIPWXNet web site by looking under Atlantic Tropical Products off the Main Menu of the web site. Earl Advisory information can also be seen off the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

Atlantic Tropical Update – 8/24/10

Hello to all…

The Atlantic Tropical season is starting to get into full swing. In addition to Hurricane Danielle, a new tropical depression is likely going to form later today near the Cape Verde Islands and advisories are likely to be initiated today for this system. See link to the National Hurricane Center Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook listed below:

http://kamala.cod.edu/TPC/latest.abnt20.KNHC.html

If that occurs, this will be the 7th tropical depression of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season. If it increases into a tropical storm, it would be named Earl. An update on this system will occur later today if it becomes a tropical depression.

The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team continues to closely monitor the progress of Hurricane Danielle and this area of disturbed weather near the Cape Verde Islands of Africa. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Danielle Becomes Second Hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Hello to all..

Danielle is now a hurricane and is the second hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Danielle is expected to undergo rapid intensification and may reach major hurricane status in the next day or two. Computer models continue to project Danielle to recurve and remain out in the open Atlantic Ocean but track errors can be large when predicting hurricane tracks beyond a 3-day period.

Hurricane Danielle advisory information can be seen on the VoIPWXNet web site by looking under Atlantic Tropical Products off the Main Menu of the web site. Danielle Advisory information can also be seen off the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

Tropical Depression (TD) #6 Becomes Tropical Storm Danielle

Hello to all..

Tropical Depression (TD) #6 has intensified and has become Tropical Storm Danielle, the fourth Tropical Storm of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season. After a northward jog of the system today, Danielle’s track is bending back toward the west-northwest. Model projections still favor an offshore, recurvature solution but model spreads have widened and given its still relatively low latitude, the progress of Danielle will continue to be monitored over the next several days. Intensity guidance models have backed off on making Danielle a hurricane but the current advisory and official forecast as of late Sunday Evening 8/22/10 has Danielle near hurricane strength by late Tuesday.

Danielle advisory information can be seen on the VoIPWXNet web site by looking under Atlantic Tropical Products off the Main Menu of the web site. Danielle Advisory information can also be seen off the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team will closely monitor the progress of Danielle. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Tropical Depression (TD) #6 Forms in the Far Eastern Atlantic Ocean

Hello to all..

Tropical Depression (TD) #6 has formed in the far Eastern Atlantic Ocean. TD 6 is expected to traverse the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean over the next 5 days and is expected to reach Tropical Storm status on Sunday and potentially hurricane strength on Monday. If TD 6 intensifies as expected, the system will be named Danielle. Advisory information can be seen on the VoIPWXNet web site by looking under Atlantic Tropical Products off the Main Menu of the web site. TD 6 information can also be seen off the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

At this time, computer models attempt to take TD 6 on a recurvature track harmlessly out over the Atlantic Ocean. It is noted, however, that the system is at a very low latitude at this time and there appears to be a bit of bias in the models where they are taking the system further north than it is actually tracking. The VoIP Hurricane Net Management team will closely monitor the track of this system. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!
