Hurricane Tomas Update and Regular Weekly VoIP Hurricane Prep Net Will Be On Tonight

Hello to all…

Hurricane Tomas has caused severe damage on the island of Saint Vincent with over 50 homes losing their roofs including well built homes. J73WA-Wayne Abraham from the island of Dominica has been instrumental in relaying reports from the islands of St Vincent, St Lucia and Barbados via the 75 and 40 Meter Caribbean Emergency Weather Net. A report as of 630 PM ET relayed by J73WA from J88NFU states that cell phones are still up in the area. All reports are listed in the VoIP Hurricane Net Reporter Viewer which can be seen via the following link:

http://report.voipwx.net/qilan/nhcwx/list_VOIP_records?auth=OK

The VoIP Hurricane Weekly Net will take place as scheduled at 8 PM ET/7 PM CT/0000 UTC. For AE5WX-Daryl as our primary net control for this week’s net, please call for Wayne-J73WA on the emergency roll call section for an update on Tomas and leave breaks for any updates from the island during the net.

The VoIP Hurricane Net continues to monitor and provide reports to WX4NHC as Tomas continues to severely affect the islands of St Vincent and St Lucia. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Tropical Storm Shary Forms/Atlantic Tropical Update 10/29/10

Hello to all…

Despite it being late October, the Atlantic Tropics remain quite active. Tropical Storm Shary has formed in the Atlantic and will affect Bermuda with tropical storm force conditions. Shary is not expected to intensify to hurricane strength over any land area so no VoIP Hurricane Net activation is expected. Advisory information can be seen on the voipwx.net web site under the Main Menu under Atlantic Tropical Products. Advisory info can also be seen at the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

Another tropical system 360 miles east-southeast of the Southern Windward Islands is much better organized with a high chance 80% of tropical cycleone formation as it moves west-northwestward at 15-20 MPH. Air Force Reserve Unit Reconnaissance Aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system this afternoon.

There is a third system about 1300 miles west-northwest of the norther Cape Verde Islands as well but this system has a low chance of development.

The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team continues to closely monitor the progress of these systems. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Atlantic Tropical Update – 9/15/10 – Hurricane Igor/Julia & Tropical Storm Karl

Hello to all..

We have reached the peak of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season and at that peak we have 2 hurricanes and 1 tropical storm in the Atlantic. Here is an update on each system:

Hurricane Igor attained Category-5 hurricane strength last night but has weakened a bit to a large and still powerful category 4 hurricane. Igor is expected to maintain at least major hurricane strength over the next 5 days with a potential significant threat to the island of Bermuda over the weekend. This will be monitored closely for activation of the VoIP Hurricane Net in the Saturday Afternoon through Sunday Afternoon timeframe.

Hurricane Julia has attained Category-4 hurricane strength as it traverses the open waters of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. Julia is expected to weaken a bit as it moves into colder Atlantic waters and experiences shear from Hurricane Igor. Julia is no threat to land and is only a threat to shipping interests.

Tropical Storm Karl is about to make landfall in the Yucatan Peninsula as a strong tropical storm. Karl will traverse land over the Yucatan and weaken to a tropical depression but emerge over the Southwest Gulf of Mexico where it will reintensify and is expected to regain hurricane strength and make landfall in Northeast Mexico as a Category-1 hurricane with impact being felt in Northeast Mexico in the late Friday Afternoon through Saturday Morning timeframe. This may also prompt activation of the VoIP Hurricane Net for that timeframe.

Anyone who has contacts in the affected area of Northeast Mexico or Bermuda or who is directly in these areas are asked to closely monitor the progress of Karl and Igor respectively. We ask that they join potential VoIP Hurricane Net activations over the afforementioned timeframes stated above to provide damage and surface weather reports.

Major Hurricane Igor/Tropical Storm Julia/Atlantic Tropical Update – 9/13/10

Hello to all…

Igor has now intensified into a major hurricane and is currently traversing the open waters of the Central Atlantic Ocean. Igor is expected to remain a major hurricane over the next several days and is expected to be come a large hurricane. The threat of Igor to the Northern Leeward Islands, Bahamas, Bermuda or the US East Coast is unknown at this time. The model spread on Igor is quite wide right now and will be contingent on the strength of the ridge over the Central Atlantic Ocean versus the weakness in the ridge created by a trough that will be going through the regon.

In the past 18 hours, Tropical Depression (TD) #12 formed in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean near the Cape Verde Islands and has intensified into Tropical Storm Julia. Julia could brigng tropical storm force wind conditions and heavy rainfall to the Southern Cape Verde Islands where a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect. After that, Julia is expected to remain over the open waters of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean and may intensify to minimal hurricane strength.

Advisory information for Igor and Julia can be seen on the VoIPWXNet web site by looking under Atlantic Tropical Products off the Main Menu of the web site. Igor and Julia Advisory information can also be seen off the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

Beyond Igor and Julia, another area of disturbed weather over the Central Caribbean Sea that is producing heavy rainfall over Jamaica, Cuba, and Hispaniola and has a medium chance for development as it moves over the Northwest Caribbean Sea. This system will be monitored as well.

The VoIP Hurricane Net will continue to closely monitor Igor, Julia, and any other areas of disturbed weather into the Tropics as needed. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Tropical Storm Igor Forms Over the Far Eastern Atlantic Ocean

Hello to all…

Tropical Strom Igor has formed over the Far Eastern Atlantic Ocean this morning. A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the Southern Cape Verde Islands as Igor is within 95 miles of the southermost islands. After passing near the Cape Verde Islands, Igor will traverse the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean over the next 5 days as a threat to shipping interests. It is unclear whether Igor will affect any land areas at this time but Igor is expected to intensify into a hurricane over the 5-day period as conditions become more favorable over the Atlantic Ocean for tropical cyclone development.

Igor advisory information can be seen on the VoIPWXNet web site by looking under Atlantic Tropical Products off the Main Menu of the web site. Igor Advisory information can also be seen off the National Hurricane Center web site via the following link:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

The VoIP Hurricane Net Management will closely monitor the progress of Igor. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!
