SKYWARN Recognition Day (SRD) 2013 on the *WX_TALK* Echolink Conference Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 System

Hello to all..

SKYWARN Recognition Day is December 7th, 2013 from 0000-2400 UTC (Friday Evening 12/6/13 from 700 PM ET-Saturday Evening 12/7/13 at 7 PM ET) and Echolink and IRLP will be playing a role in SRD as it has in past years. SKYWARN Recognition Day is an opportunity for National Weather Service Forecast Offices across the United States to thank SKYWARN Spotters for their efforts in obtaining timely severe weather reporting for the protection of life and property. This is the SKYWARN program’s main mission.

EchoLink and IRLP are just a couple of modes people can utilize to contact NWS offices during SKYWARN Recognition Day. Many NWS offices will be on 2 Meters, 440 MHz, HF, Digital other VHF/UHF bands. Additional details on SKYWARN Recognition Day can be found via the following links:

http://hamradio.noaa.gov

The December issue of the ARRL QST Magazine has a story on National Weather Service / ARRL SKYWARN Recognition Day on page 65 in their Public Service Column.

As in past years, the EchoLink *WX_TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP reflector 9219 system will be scheduling time for NWS offices in 1-2 hour time slots to act as a net control to make contacts with spotters that are on the system. If a NWS office runs out of contacts and there are other NWS offices on the system, the NWS office acting as net control can turn it over to a different NWS office to act as a net control on the system at their discretion.

We’d like to ask NWS offices to do their best to adhere to the schedule. Sometimes this is difficult due to the number of contacts received by NWS offices. We ask for everyone’s patience and working cooperatively to respect the time slot schedule.

Below is the current SRD schedule. See the list of NWS offices below:

Time in UTC NWS Office Call-Sign
0000-0100: WX0GLD (Confirmed Time slot for This year)

SubTropical Storm Melissa Forms in the Central Atlantic – No Threat To Land Expected

Hello to all..

SubTropical Storm Melissa has formed in the Central Atlantic. Melissa is located 695 miles east-southeast of Bermuda with Maximum Sustained Winds of 50 MPH and a large circulation with winds extending 275 miles mainly northwest through northeast of the center. Melissa will move northwest until Tuesday and then begin moving north and then northeastward over the next few days. Melissa will have a chance to strengthen a bit more and likely will transition to a tropical storm over the next 48 hours. Melissa is not expected to threaten any land areas and should only be a threat to Marine interests.

Advisory information on Melissa can be seen off the Main Menu of the VoIP Hurricane web site at http://www.voipwx.net and the VoIP Hurricane Net Facebook and Twitter feeds auto update when new advisory information as issued by the National Hurricane Center. The links for our facebook and twitter feeds follow below:

Remembering Hurricane Sandy One Year Later

Hello to all..

Exactly one year ago today, the VoIP Hurricane Net was active as Hurricane Sandy was causing significant impact particularly in the New York City, Long Island and New Jersey region but also across much of the Mid-Atlantic and Southern New England areas with hurricane force wind gusts, historic coastal storm surge flooding as well as heavy rainfall and even Blizzard conditions out into West Virginia. The following special announcement was created with a focus on Sandy’s impacts in Southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic region including New York City, Long Island and New Jersey. It can be seen at the following link:

http://www.wx1box.org/node/3362

We are thankful that this year has been a quiet Hurricane Season to date and we hope it remains that way through season’s end on November 30th, 2013. Thanks to everyone that supported Hurricane Sandy operations one year ago today and for your continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!
