Tropical Depression Ingrid and Atlantic Tropical Update – Monday 9/16/13

Hello to all..

Hurricane Ingrid made landfall Monday Morning near La Pesca Mexico. Heavy rainfall between Ingrid, now a tropical depression, and Tropical Storm Manuel on the Western side of Mexico have the potential to produce life threatening flash floods and mudslides. Due to the fact that there were no Echolink/IRLP nodes in the affected area of Ingrid and no relays to the affected area of Ingrid, the VoIP Hurricane Net did not activate.

Elsewhere in the tropics, Tropical Storm Humberto regenerated earlier today. Humberto is currently only a threat to shipping interests at this time. Another area of disturbed weather in the Northwest Caribbean Sea is being monitored with a low chance of development as it moves over the Yucatan Peninsula and into the Southwest Gulf of Mexico over the next few days.

The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team will continue to closely monitor the Tropics. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Hurricane Ingrid Update and Possible Net Activation – Sunday 9/15/13 at 1100 AM EDT/1000 AM CDT/1500 UTC

Hello to all..

The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team is closely monitoring the progress of Hurricane Ingrid and possible net activation. After steady strengthening on Saturday, Ingrid has weakened Sunday Morning and is currently a 75 MPH Category-1 hurricane. It is now becoming unclear if she will maintain hurricane strength as she approaches the Mexican coast. The shear is foreast to relax as she approaches the Northeast Mexico coast prior to landfall which would allow her to maintain hurricane status but the intensification/weakening process of tropical cyclones remains an area subjected to forecast error. Impacts to land will begin late Sunday Evening with landfall now expected around daybreak Monday Morning.

Review of Echolink and IRLP nodes so far have shown no nodes close enough to the impact area of the coast line. There also appears to be a lack of online weather stations and storm bloggers in this region. We have reached out to a couple of past contacts in Mexico to see if they would be available to support reporting from the affected area of Hurricane Ingrid. If there are Amateur Radio stations with relays into the affected area of Hurricane Ingrid, please contact me directly at kd1cy@voipwx.net. A path way to gain reports into the affected area of Ingrid along with Ingrid’s hurricane status will determine potential net activation later tonight or Monday Morning.

We continue to closely monitor the progress of Hurricane Ingrid. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Tropical Depression (TD) 6 Becomes Tropical Storm Fernand/Atlantic Tropical Update 800 PM EDT Sunday 8/25/13

Hello to all..

TD 6 has become Tropical Storm Fernand with maximum sustained winds of 45 MPH. Fernand is expected to continue to strengthen up until landfall in the state of Veracruz Mexico. The latest National Hurricane Center (NHC) Advisory states that Fernand should reach Maximum Sustained winds of 60 MPH prior to landfall. The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team will continue to monitor the progress of Fernand as he makes landfall in Mexico.

Later this week, the tropics may become more active as stated in the last update. A tropical wave is expected to emerge off Africa later tonight or Monday and move westward over the tropical Atlantic with some development possible later this week. This system now has a 30% chance for development in the greater than 48 hour to 5-day period which is an increase of 10% since the last update and now means a medium chance for development. The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team will continue to monitor the progress of this Tropical Wave.
