Below is our WX4NHC Annual Station Test announcement and a brief statement about the upcoming hurricane season.

The 2020 Hurricane Season outlook is about 140% more active than the average season.

That is about 14-18 named storms, which includes 7-9 hurricanes, possibly 4 major hurricanes (Cat-3 to Cat-5).

The 2019 season had 18 named storms, 6 became hurricanes, of which 3 were major hurricanes.

The above average prediction is largely due to the hot Atlantic and Caribbean waters and lack of a substantial El Niño in the Pacific.

The combination of a busy hurricane season and the ongoing Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic could be a nightmare scenario for areas affected by hurricanes.

FEMA and local Emergency Management Agencies are issuing COVID-19 guidelines for Hurricane Shelters, which include face masks and social spacing.

Please stay informed and prepare your Hurricane Supplies early.

Amateur Radio Station at the National Hurricane Center, Miami Florida

WX4NHC will be On-The-Air for the Annual Station Test
Saturday, May 30th , 2020 from 9AM- 5 PM EDT ( 1300z- 2100z)
This will be our 40th year of public service at NHC.

The purpose of this event is to test WX4NHC Amateur Radio Station Operations and equipment, antennas and computers prior to this year’s Hurricane Season, which starts June 1st and runs through November 30th.

This event is good practice for Ham Radio Operators world-wide to practice Amateur Radio communications available during times of severe weather.

We will be making brief contacts on many frequencies and modes, exchanging signal reports and basic weather data exchange (Sunny, Rain, Temperature, etc.) with any station in any location.

WX4NHC will be On-The-Air on HF, VHF, UHF , 2 & 30 meter APRS and WinLink wx4nhc@winlink.org subject must contain //WL2K.

We will try to stay on the Hurricane Watch Net frequency 14.325 MHz most of the time. Also 7.268 MHz depending on propagation.

However, we will be operating different frequencies depending on QRM.

Colorado State University has put out their seasonal hurricane forecast on Thursday April 2nd and they are expecting an above normal hurricane season. Given the current COVID-19 crisis, this will bear close watching as resources across the nation and around the world are absorbed coping with this current crisis. While it is hoped the COVID-19 crisis will settle down a bit by summer, there will likely be the potential for disaster fatigue among the various disaster response agencies both governmental and non-governmental at the local, regional and national level and if COVID-19 continues through the summer, resources nationally will be stretched to even further limits. If the hurricane season is active with multiple landfalling hurricanes in the Atlantic basin, this will take additional resources to manage that may not be available. This will be a question of the month and a topic for our monthly VoIP Hurricane Net this month tonight at 8 PM.

SKYWARN Recognition Day is December 7th, 2019 from 0000-2400 UTC (Friday Evening 12/6/19 from 700 PM ET-Saturday Evening 12/7/19 at 700 PM ET) and Echolink and IRLP will be playing a role in SRD as it has in past years. SKYWARN Recognition Day is an opportunity for National Weather Service Forecast Offices across the United States to thank SKYWARN Spotters for their efforts in obtaining timely severe weather reporting for the protection of life and property. This is the SKYWARN program’s main mission.

EchoLink and IRLP are just a couple of modes people can utilize to contact NWS offices during SKYWARN Recognition Day. Many NWS offices will be on 2 Meters, 440 MHz, HF and other VHF/UHF bands. Additional details on SKYWARN Recognition Day can be found via the following links:

As in past years, the EchoLink *WX_TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP reflector 9219 system will be scheduling time for NWS offices in 1-2 hour time slots to act as a net control to make contacts with spotters that are on the system. If a NWS office runs out of contacts and there are other NWS offices on the system, the NWS office acting as net control can turn it over to a different NWS office to act as a net control on the system at their discretion. Also, Allstar 28848 will be connected into the network with those with Allstar capability.

We’d like to ask NWS offices to do their best to adhere to the schedule. Sometimes this is difficult due to the number of contacts received by NWS offices. We ask for everyone’s patience and working cooperatively to respect the time slot schedule.

The New England Gateway system is on EchoLink Conference server *NEW-ENG3* Node: 9123, IRLP reflector 9123. If other NWS offices would like to join the system, they are welcome to do so and participants in SKYWARN Recognition Day can also use that system to make contact with various NWS offices. This is a great place to move off the *WX_TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 system after your scheduled time if other Amateurs or NWS offices whish to make contact with you.

Also, the Western Reflector will be having NWS offices calling CQ as in past years and have multiple reflector channels and Echolink conferences available. A few technical reminders for folks interested in making contacts with the NWS Forecast Offices on the *WX-TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 and New England Reflector Gateway IRLP 9123/*NEW-ENG3* Echolink Node: 9123 systems:

-The system allows both EchoLink and IRLP connections. For EchoLink users, you connect to the *WX-TALK* Node: 7203 conference system. For IRLP users, you would connect to IRLP reflector 9219.

-If you are using EchoLink, the RF node or PC that you’re using must have EchoLink conferencing disabled. If it is not disabled, the system will automatically kick the node or PC off of the system. The reason this occurs is to prevent unintentional interference from a conferencing station that may not know the node is connected somewhere else. This will keep traffic moving on the net and reduce interference considerably.

**VoIP Hurricane Net secured formal net activation at 8 PM EDT Monday Evening 9/2/19. Given latest forecast track keeping the hurricane offshore of Florida and Dorian’s lack of movement overnight, the VoIP Hurricane Net will remain in a monitoring mode, today, Tuesday 9/3/19 and we will revisit formal activation status throughout the day each day this week until Dorian no longer poses a threat to the Southeast US coast. **
**WX4NHC, the Amateur Radio Station at the National Hurricane Center secured at 230 PM EDT Monday 9/2/19 and will not be active today at this time.**

Here are the VoIP Hurricane Net and WX4NHC Activation Plans for Dorian as of Tuesday Morning 9/3/19 at 730 AM EDT/1130 UTC:

The VoIP Hurricane Net went into a monitoring mode Monday Evening 9/2/19 at 8 PM EDT after reactivating at 8 AM EDT Monday Morning 9/2/19. The Abacos and Grand Bahama islands have had catastrophic impacts from Dorian. Information was relayed via social media outlets to WX4NHC. It is noted that the Hurricane Watch Net had contact with a couple Amateur Operators in the Abacos Islands but lost contact with them when the eyewall hit and had contact with an Amateur Radio Operator in Nassau Bahamas but this was south of the major impact area. The magnitude of the damage in the Abacos and Grand Bahama Island is likely that of a EF3 to EF4 Tornado. Given Dorian remaining stationary and offshore and the fact that WX4NHC, the Amateur Radio station, will remain inactive for the same reasons, the VoIP Hurricane Net will stay in a monitoring mode and not reactivate formally today at this time and continue to monitor the progress of Dorian throughout today and each day this week until the threat from Dorian has passed.

WX4NHC, the Amateur Radio station at the National Hurricane Center, will hold its On-The-Air test on Saturday June 1st, 2019 from 900 AM-500 PM EDT (1300-2100 UTC). WX4NHC will be on the *WX_TALK* Echolink conference node: 7203/IRLP 9219 system from 400-500 PM EDT on Saturday June 1st, 2019. Amateur Radio Station at the National Hurricane Center, Miami Florida

WX4NHC will be On-The-Air for the Annual Station Test
Saturday, June 1st , 2019 from 9AM- 5 PM EDT (1300z- 2100z)

This will be our 39th year of public service at NHC.

The purpose of this event is to test Amateur Radio Station equipment, antennas and computers prior to this year’s Hurricane Season, which starts June 1st and runs through November 30th.

This event is good practice for Ham Radio Operators world-wide as well as NWS Staff to become familiar with Amateur Radio communications available during times of severe weather.

We will be making brief contacts on many frequencies and modes, exchanging signal reports and basic weather data exchange (“Sunny”, or “Rain”, etc.) with any station in any location.

WX4NHC will be On-The-Air on HF, VHF, UHF , 2 & 30 meter APRS and WinLink wx4nhc@winlink.org subject must contain “//WL2K”.

We will try to stay on the Hurricane Watch Net frequency 14.325 MHz most of the time.

Due to space and equipment limitations, we will have 2 operators per shift, we cannot be on all frequencies or on every mode at the same time.

QSL Cards are available via WD4R. Please send your card with a S.A.S.E.

Please do NOT send QSLs directly to the Hurricane Center address, as it will get delayed.

Due to security measures:

NO VISITORS will be allowed entry to NHC without prior clearance from NHC PIO and Security.

Only WX4NHC Operators on the pre-approved operating schedule will be allowed entry.

Hello to all…

Amateur Radio will again be represented at the 2019 National Hurricane Conference which will be held this year in New Orleans Louisiana. The conference theme is to improve hurricane preparedness as it has been in past years. All Amateur Radio sessions are free. For 2019, all the Amateur Radio sessions will be on Tuesday April 23rd, 2019 from 1030 AM-1215 PM CDT and 130-500 PM CDT. Each presenter will not only give an overview of their respective group but also how their group handled both the historic 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season and the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season. We will be working to have the session livestreamed, however, in recent years, we have had issues with proper Internet connectivity speeds to support the livestream due to restrictions on Internet speed on some hotel Internet providers. Right now, the plan is to provide it but if not the videos will be uploaded and provided post event.
