VoIP Hurricane Net Activation for Hurricane Ernesto Impacts on Bermuda Closed on Saturday 8/17/24 at 12 PM EDT/1600 UTC

Hello to all…

The VoIP Hurricane Net Activation for Hurricane Ernesto and impacts on Bermuda was closed on Saturday 8/17/24 at 12 PM EDT/1600 UTC. Bermuda had about 73% of the country or about 26,000 people without power. Coastal storm surge and wave action battered coastal areas. Sustained hurricane force conditions of 74.4 Knots (86 MPH) with a wind gust to 94.7 knots or 109 MPH was recorded at the National Museum of Bermuda on the Northwest part of the island. Hurricane force wind gusts were also recorded at the National Bermuda Library of 86 MPH with hurricane force wind gusts at St. David’s Island of 75 MPH and Spanishport Bermuda of 74 MPH. These weather station reports were relayed by our net along with social media reports of trees down and some structural damage. The tropical storm conditions with gusts to hurricane force lasted an extended period of time as Ernesto slowed after making landfall on Bermuda. A total of 21 reports were sent in via our net. Special thanks to K2DCD-Dennis, KC5FM-Lloyd, WX9VOR-Debby and AE4WX-Mark for monitoring the network for this hurricane and helping with overall net operations. Approximately 40 volunteer hours of service were logged by the team. A list of reports gathered from this net can be seen via the VoIP Hurricane Net Report viewer at the following link:

Ernesto is expected to make a close pass to Southeast Newfoundland Canada while undergoing post tropical transition. At this time, we will watch Ernesto’s progress but based on his track and intensity, it appears a VoIP Hurricane Net activation for Southeast Newfoundland Canada will not be necessary but we will coordinate with the Canadian Hurricane Centre in addition to the WX4NHC Amateur Radio team on support. If no support is required, this will be the last message concerning Ernesto.

Elsewhere in the tropics, no tropical cyclone formation is expected over the next 7 days but as we get to late this week into next week, there could be tropical waves to monitor and we will be drawing closer to the mid-September peak of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, so now is the time to be prepared. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Tropical Storm Ernesto Forms in the Atlantic – Monday 8/12/24 – 545 PM EDT/2145 UTC Update

Hello to all…

Tropical Storm Erneseto has formed in the Atlantic. Tropical Storm Warnings are posted for portions of the Caribbean Islands including the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. At this time, Ernesto is expected to be below hurricane strength as it affects the islands and as it turns northwest and northward away from the islands, Ernesto will strengthen into a hurricane. Given this forecast scenario, VoIP Hurricane Net activation is not expected as it affects the islands but the VoIP Hurricane Net Management team will closely monitor Ernesto’s progress in case he intensifies into a hurricane sooner. There is also a possible hurricane impact to the island of Bermuda as we get towards this weekend that will bear watching for possible VoIP Hurricane Net Activation. This will be updated as we get closer to this weekend. Advisories on Ernesto can be seen of the main menu of the voipwx.net web site under Atlantic Tropical Products, via our voipwxnet Facebook and Twitter feeds or directly via the National Hurricane Center web site at the following link:

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

The VoIP Hurricane Net will closely monitor the progress of Ernesto and any new developments in the Tropics. Thanks to all for their continued support for the VoIP Hurricane Net!

Tropical Storm Debby Update – Wednesday 8/7/24 at 740 AM EDT/1140 UTC

Hello to all…

Tropical Storm Debby is slowly intensifying offshore of the Georgia and South Carolina coast but lacks a good inner core to allow for reintensification and is currently expected to remain below hurricane strength when it makes a second landfall on the South Carolina coast late tonight or Thursday. Where Debby will remain below hurricane strength, no further VoIP Hurricane Net activations are anticipated for Debby. After the second landfall as a tropical storm, Debby will then get merged and swept into a frontal system and track north through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US with significant flooding and severe weather possible. Debby has caused significant flooding from heavy rainfall and storm surge and scattered tornadoes along its path after making landfall as a hurricane in the Big Bend area of Florida and is being handled at the local and regional level by ARES and SKYWARN groups.

Advisories on Debby can be seen off the main menu of the voipwx.net web site, via our Facebook and Twitter social media feeds and via the National Hurricane Center web site at the following link:

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov

Elsewhere in the Atlantic tropics, a tropical wave in the southwestern Caribbean Sea only has a low chance, 10% of development over the next 7 days as it track towards the Central America and Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico coastline. The VoIP Hurricane Net Management team will continue to monitor all developments in the tropics. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

VoIP Hurricane Net Activation for Hurricane Debby Secured at Monday 8/5/24 at 1030 AM EDT

Hello to all…

The VoIP Hurricane Net activated informally at 6 AM EDT and went to a formal net at 8 AM EDT Monday Morning for Hurricane Debby as her landfall occurred approximately 7 hours earlier than originally forecast. Nonetheless, 11 reports were sent into WX4NHC, the Amateur Radio Station at the National Hurricane Center. This included an online weather station report of a 98 MPH Wind Gust with Sustained winds of 68 MPH at Horseshoe Beach, FL and a wind gust to 91 MPH a few miles south of Steinhatchee, FL. Storm surge flooding, and wind damage were also reported. Wind gusts of 60-70 MPH extended inland into Mayo through Madison FL and included Valdosta GA from an Amateur Radio APRS Station and those reports were submitted via our net. Special thanks to AE4WX-Mark, N1YLQ-Sparky and KC5FM-Lloyd for their support during this net activation. Full details on reports sent into WX4NHC can be seen on the VoIP Hurricane Net Report Viewer at the following link:

https://www.voipwx.net/qilan/nhcwx/list_VOIP_records1?auth=OK

The VoIP Hurricane Net will closely monitor the progress of Debby as it causes record breaking flooding in the Southeast US in Southeast Georgia and much of South Carolina and potentially North Carolina. If our network can assist and local and regional groups in the area, this system is available for use. While the current forecast keeps Debby from regaining hurricane strength, there are some weather models that bring Debby to hurricane strength and this will be watched closely as it will depend how much of the system remains over water to regain strength. The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team will closely monitor the progress of Debby. Thanks to all for their continued support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!

VoIP Hurricane Net Will Activate Monday 8/5/24 8 AM EDT for Debby and Impacts to the Florida Big Bend Coast

Hello to all..

**The VoIP Hurricane Net will activate at 8 AM EDT Monday Morning and remain active for as long as necessary for Debby as it is expected she will strengthen into a hurricane on approach to the Florida Big Bend Coast and could intensify rapidly before landfall. The net, on *WX_TALK* Echolink conference node: 7203/IRLP 9219 system and other VoIP radio systems via the KC5FM-R node is supporting WX4NHC, the Amateur Radio station at the National Hurricane Center in Miami Florida.**
**An additional activation for the Carolinas is possible later in the week but will largely depend on Debby’s track which will be slow and erratic and may or may not be over the ocean waters which will determine her eventual strength in the Carolinas.**
**WX4NHC will also be active with their Amateur Radio Station as well during this timeframe.**

Here are the VoIP Hurricane Net Plans for Debby as of Sunday 8/4/24 at 1020 AM EDT:
