Hurricane Irma – Atlantic Tropical Update as of Saturday 9/2/17 800 AM EDT and Hurricane Harvey Recovery Update

We are entering the peak of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season and there are several items of interest in the Atlantic Tropics as we get close to the peak of the season. We will go through those items now.
Hurricane Irma
Hurricane Irma is a powerful hurricane that is currently of Cat-2 intensity with 110 MPH winds and has been fluctuating between Cat-2 and Cat-3 status. Irma is expected to track west and then west-southwest for the next few days before bending back west and west-northwest. Per the 500 AM EDT/0900 UTC Saturday 9/2/17 National Hurricane Center (NHC) advisory, interests in the northern Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of this system. We will discuss the projected path of Irma on tonight’s VoIP Hurricane Prep Net at 800 PM EDT tonight. Atlantic Tropical Update – Another Area of disturbed weather as of Saturday 9/2/17 – 800 AM EDT
There is yet another area of disturbed weather producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms located a few hundred miles southwest of Cabo Verde Islands and associated with a tropical wave. This system has potential in the 2-5 day period as it moves westward. It has near 0 percent chance of development within 48 hours but a medium chance, 60%, for development within 5 days. The VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team will closely monitor the progress of this system. You can find the Tropical Weather Outlook off the main menu of the voipwxnet web site, via the voipwxnet Facebook/Twitter feeds and at the NHC web site at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov as well.
Hurricane Harvey Recovery Update
Hurricane Harvey made landfall approximately one week ago in Rockport Texas and went on to produce catastrophic and record-breaking flooding in Southeast Texas and parts of Western Louisiana. The VoIP Hurricane Net took the unusual step of maintaining a listening watch for much of last week for any needs from the affected area. While things were very quiet on the system for most of the week, many monitored and there were at least a handful of check-ins from the affected area each day with updates on conditions from their parts of Texas. Two reports of families needing rescue were handled by the net and relayed to the United States Coast Guard through contacts in the Humanity Road non-profit organization. The Harvey recovery will likely go on for many months to come. Those interested in reading up on Amateur Radio efforts in the affected area can check out the following link for further information:

The Weather Prediction Center is issuing advisories on now Post-Tropical Cyclone Harvey has he continues to produce heavy rainfall and severe weather into parts of the Ohio Valley and Southeast US. You can find these advisories off the main menu of the voipwxnet web site, via the voipwxnet Facebook/Twitter feeds and at the NHC web site at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov as well.
The VoIP Hurricane Net Management team’s thoughts and prayers are with the many folks in Southeast Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey both from the direct landfall of Harvey and the catastrophic heavy rainfall that followed.
