VoIP Hurricane Net Monthly Prep Net March 2010 Presentation: Overview of 2010 National Hurricane Conference Presentation and February 25th-26th, 2010 Major Nor'easter ARES and SKYWARN Activation The March 2010 VoIP Hurricane Prep Net featured a presentation from Director of Operations for the VoIP Hurricane Net, Rob Macedo-KD1CY, on the 2010 National Hurricane Conference and the VoIP Hurricane Net's participation in the conference and the February 25th-26th 2010 Major Nor'easter ARES and SKYWARN Activation. The conference overview was provided to give net participants an idea of the net's role in the National Hurricane Conference and to tell folks about a trip/visit to the National Hurricane Center Amateur Radio Station, WX4NHC, to visit with the coordinators and team members. The major nor'easter presentation described how this nor'easter that affected New England on February 25th-26th packed the equivalent punch of a minimal category-1 hurricane. The presentation discussed some advancements in IRLP reflector technlogy that will be utilized in the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season and will enable more interoperability with Echolink. presentation portion of the net starts at approximately 13 minutes 30 seconds (13:30) into the presentation. The brush fires that affected Australia were some of the most devastating seen in 20 to 30 years over the country. Tony-VK3JED described why these Bushfires occurred and how, WICEN, the Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network which is similar to the US ARES and RACES programs, responded to the disaster providing Amateur Radio Emergency Communications support where required. Tony presented the basics of D-STAR and the need to be able to hook D-STAR with Echolink and IRLP over time and in a well coordinated fashion. Tony also discussed how folks can get more involved with D-STAR. VoIP Hurricane Monthly Prep Net May 2008 Presentation: EchoLink/IRLP/VoIP Technical Enhancements Presented by Tony Langdon-VK3JED, VoIP Hurricane Net Technical Coordinator The May 2008 VoIP Hurricane Net Presentation was dedicated to a presentation put together by Tony Langdon-VK3JED, VoIP Hurricane Technical Coordinator, on enhancements to EchoLink/IRLP/VoIP modes including potential opportunity for EchoLink/IRLP to interface with D-STAR. Tony's presentation was well received and gives a glimpse of how the technologies we utilize today will be enhanced and utilized well into the future. The Net Management team then participated in the National Hurricane Conference Amateur Radio Workshop along with the WX4NHC Coordinators and increased the visibility of the operations of the WX4NHC Amateur Station, now entering its 28th year of service, and increased the visibility the VoIP Hurricane Net for those Amateurs and Conference attendees who were at the workshop. The Amateur Radio Workshop was also videotaped and uploaded to the web site through cooperation of the North Shore Radio Association and the efforts of VoIP Hurricane Net Scheduler, Jim Palmer-KB1KQW. In addition, Danny Musten-KD4RAA, IRLP Net Manager and Storm Study partner presented Storm Study's participation in the conference and their continued cooperation with the VoIP Hurricane Net. Rob reviewed keys to hurricane preparedness and how to monitor information sources to keep abreast of hurricane activity if a hurricane threatens your part of the coastline. VoIP Hurricane Monthly Prep Net January 2008 Presentation: Hurricane Noel Rob Macedo-KD1CY, Director of Operations for the VoIP Hurricane Net gave a presentation on Hurricane Noel's impact to the Caribbean and its remnants impact on Southeast New England and the Canadian Maritimes. Noel's greatest impact was as remnants over Southeast New England and the Canadian Maritimes and as a tropical storm in the Caribbean. It underscores the importance of local response for strong systems that may not attain hurricane strength but still cause significant impact to life and property. John and Danny went to several programs for the conference and John appeared on various media and TV outlets from the conference. | New England May Floods of 2006 Presentation
Rob Macedo-KD1CY gave a presentation on the New England May Floods of 2006 and the ARES, RACES, SKYWARN and MARS operation that took place focusing in on the Southeast New Hampshire and Northeast Massachusetts portion of the NWS Taunton County Warning Area. The presentation was well-received with 30 total check-ins for the net. | Central Florida Major Tornado Outbreak Interview with Mike Leger-N1YLQ
On very short notice, Mike "Sparky" Leger-N1YLQ was able to join the February 3rd, 2007 net to give an interview on the deadly major tornado outbreak of February 2nd, 2007 in Central Florida. Sparky is affiliated with the Daytona Beach Red Cross and has performed ARES operations during the 2004 hurricanes, is a net control for the VoIP Hurricane Net, and is involved with ARES in Eastern Massachusetts and Florida. Sparky gave us background and an interview on his experiences in the February 2nd, 2007 Tornado outbreak. Sparky lives in the Daytona Beach, Florida area and described his involvement in the SKYWARN Net and Red Cross operations for the area. The link below is audio from the net.
